Walk in the Park

*Static covers the screen before switching over to a shot of Central Park in New York City. The normal patrons of the park can be seen doing their business: some run on the paved walkways, others lie on the grass and bask in the radiant sunlight. The camera pans over all of these people moseying about before settling on one person sitting on a green park bench. The person, presumably a man, is dressed in a black hoodie with the hood pulled up over his hair, blue jeans, and black Nike tennis shoes. His hands are placed in the hoodie's front pockets. To the left of the man sits a black Nike-branded backpack that looks to be filled with objects. After a few moments, the man pulls his hood down to reveal the golden hair of a familiar face.*

Syndicate: Hello, Jake. Glad you could join me on this beautiful summer day.

*He crosses his legs and smiles into the camera.*

Syndicate: You have me all figured out, don't you? You really got me with that bait and switch and you got me to admit that I'm "underestimating" you. Good job.

*He slowly claps and continues to smile.*

Syndicate: But even in your moment of brilliance, you're still getting things wrong. As you know, I've been around here for four years now. Over those four years, I have never - NEVER - underestimated an opponent. Actually, quite the contrary: I overestimate. I prepare for the worst so that what actually hits me doesn't hurt as much. The same goes for you, Jake. I know, with your new "fighter" style, that you could knock me out with a single punch if you really, really wanted. I know that you are capable of beating me. But...CAN you beat me?

*He quickly shakes his head.*

Syndicate: You listed off a few people in your latest video. Kurtis Ray. Willie Steen. Darkness. You know what you and those three men have in common? All four of you have claimed, on numerous occasions, that I underestimate you or don't take you seriously enough. But if that's true...

*Syndicate reaches to his left and unzips the top of the Nike backpack. This reveals the edge of the Undisputed World title inside the sack.*

Syndicate: ...then how am I a four-time World Heavyweight Champion?

*He looks back at the camera.*

Syndicate: I have made a career out of taking down fools like yourself. In fact, you're essentially a mirror image of Kurtis Ray, when you think about it. Look how that man turned out. A broken shell of his former self. Essentially a non-factor in the World title picture. All because he decided to pick a fight with the Los Angeles Outlaw. Such a damn shame. And the worst part is...it's you, Jake Devine, that has to follow in his footsteps. After all the work you've put in, after all the changes you've made to make yourself a better fighter and a better person...you're going to get the golden opportunity to run head-first into a brick wall.

*The champion snickers.*

Syndicate: You talked about my ego in your latest spat. You say that you "learned to be humble" and how to "fix" your biggest problems. Let me ask you a question, Kurtis: do you know WHY I've been at the top of the WWX for so long? Is it because I've been absurdly lucky? No, not at all. Do I have the support of management? Far from it. Maybe my competition is just weak? Nah, I know that I'm up against world-class athletes every damn day. No, I've remained in the main event scene for years now because I adapt to survive and fight another day. That right there is what matters, Jake. Not preparation or mindset or strength or ego or anything else. The match will always - ALWAYS - come down to survival. Unfortunately for you, survival is something I'm especially good at.

*Syndicate leans back on the green park bench and puts his hands behind his head, looking up at the blue sky of New York City.*

Syndicate: We're going to go through hell together, Jake, and that's not going to be a walk in the park for either of us. No-DQ, submission, steel cage. If you truly do want this World title that I currently hold - and I know you do - then you're going to have to EARN it against who YOU ADMIT is the greatest professional wrestler alive today. And I know this whole story of yours is starting to match up with the "Rocky" movies, and you might be the valiant underdog taking on the champion. But there's a vast difference there: Apollo Creed underestimated Rocky Balboa. I, Syndicate, am overestimating you, Jake Devine, and I'm doing it gladly. Ego plays no part in that, as far as I'm concerned.

Syndicate: I am the best wrestler in the WWX, meaning that I deserve this World title more than anyone else. That includes you, no matter how much you've improved or how important your childhood dream is. And as the champion, it is my job to defeat challengers like you, Jake. But I'm not going to just "defeat" you. That wouldn't be fun, now would it?

*He flashes a smile.*

Syndicate: I'm going to drag you through hell on Fury. I'm going to make sure that you know EXACTLY what I'm capable of doing to you, just like I've done to every other opponent I've ever faced. I'm going to retain my title and hold it up over your unconscious body with a smile on my face. And boy, oh boy, I can't |BLEEP|ing wait. Welcome to the Syndicate.

*Syndicate zips up his backpack, flips his hood back up, and walks off as the scene is taken over by static.*
